Threads and Tangents Music Hour

This week the musical thread is the Fall season.  It makes sense since the autumnal equinox is 9/22. The fall equinox is that time when the sun crosses the celestial equator in a southerly direction.  I don’t know about you, but it’s also the time when I start worrying about Bellingham’s short winter days.  For those of us up here in the NW corner, it might be time to go out and get a light therapy lamp.

This week, the musical thread is COFFEE. Coffee has an interesting social and musical history, some of it funny, some grim, and occasionally just weird. That's a lot of ground to cover and I'll do that by playing songs by: Guy Clark, Ani Difranco, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Steve Goodman, Juan Luis Guerra, The Ink Spots, The Jayhawks, Bill Morrissey, Ella Mae Morse, Osibisa, Otis Redding, Squeeze, and Abigail Washburn.

This week, the musical thread is live music I've heard since moving to the PNW. A year ago, we drove into Bellingham for the first time and it’s been a great first year here. Over the past 12 months, I've heard plenty of excellent live music, so I'll play songs from some of the local, and touring, musicians that I’ve heard in, and around, Bellingham.We'll hear: Jake Blount, Bryan Bowers, Michael Cleveland and Tommy Emmanuel, Della Mae, Matt Eakle in the David Grisman Quintet, Sean Hall, Thomas Harris and Miles Black, Stacy Jones, The Mavericks, Mr. Sun, Pearl Django, Del Ray, The Special Consensus, and Richard Thompson.

This week, the musical thread is Taking the Bus.  I'll play songs about waiting for a bus, riding on the bus, and falling in love on the bus.  Even about important historical and cultural events on the bus.  
We'll hear: Chuck Berry, Buffalo Tom, Eraserheads, Grateful Dead, Hollies, Husker Du, The Move, Neville Brothers, The Replacements, Jonathan Richman, Bruce Springsteen, Muddy Waters, The Who, Wilco, and ZZ Top. 

This week, the musical thread is One-Hit Wonders.  We'll hear: Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, Barrett Strong, The Chantays, ? and The Mysterians, Buffalo Springfield, Friend & Lover, Thunderclap Newman, Mountain, Warren Zevon, Tom Tom Club, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, Deee-Lite, Blind Melon, The Wallflowers, and Norah Jones.

This week, the musical thread is the National Recording Registry’s recent inductees. The Recording Registry is a list of sound recordings deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress. These recordings are not necessarily selected as the “best” recordings of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture.We’ll hear: A Tribe Called Quest, Buena Vista Social Club, Jimmy Cliff, Duke Ellington, The Four Tops, James P. Johnson, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Albert King, Bonnie Raitt, Terry Riley, Max Roach, and The Shirelles.  

This week the musical thread is The Days Between – that’s the stretch of days that run from Jerry Garcia's birthday on August 1st, to August 9th, the day he died.  We'll look back on 30+ years of recordings that reflect the breadth and depth of Garcia’s work outside of the Grateful Dead, much of it in support of other musicians.
The bands and musicians include: Holly Bowling, David Bromberg, Ornette Coleman, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia Band, David Grisman, Hart Valley Drifters, Sanjay Mishra, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Ken Nordine, Old & in the Way, and Tony Rice.

This week the musical thread is Bellingham's Local Music Festivals.  We’ll hear from some of the artists playing at the upcoming Mt. Baker Blues Festival, the Subdued Stringband Jamboree, and the North Cascades Bluegrass Festival.
The bands and musicians include: Albert Castigila, Rick Estrin & The Nightcats, Popa Chubby, Ana Popovic, Robert Sarazin Blake, Bryan Bowers, Devin Champlin, Jim Page, Del Rey & Steve James, Blue Canyon Boys, Special Consensus, Lonesome Town Painters, Prozac Mountain Boys, and Stillhouse Junkies.

This week the musical thread is songs about, or inspired by, authors and poets. Over the hour we’ll hear songs about Steinbeck, Salinger, Kerouac, Miller, Baldwin, and Hemingway; also, poets: Miller Williams, William Blake, and Sylvia Plath.
